Primary English

Preston was first established in 1963. We published the first series of books "Primary English - A Structural Approach" for years 1 to 6. It was an instant success! Sales totalled 156,000 copies in our first year of operation.

Since then, we have expanded at a breathtaking pace. With 35 years of educational book publishing behind us, we are indeed one of the oldest and most established indigenous publishers in this region. From a small staff size in 1963, we now have a combined staff strength of about 240 in our three operational offices: Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Way back in 1967, we had made such an impact on the publishing scene that overseas publishing companies attempted to buy us over. The directors were and continue to be committed to our philosophy of "making Preston a truly home-grown company that the nation can be proud of". We thus rejected all offers. Preston Singapore

Throughout our 35 years of publishing, we had always embarked on an extensive marketing strategy. Our foray into the overseas markets includes:

  • 1972  Distribution in Indonesia
  • 1973  Distribution in Brunei
  • 1974  Distribution in Thailand
  • 1975  Distribution in Philippines
  • 1977  Distribution in Pakistan
  • 1978  Distribution in Nigeria and Kenya
  • 1982  Distribution in Mauritius
Extensive book exhibitions had also been held in the US and Australia even before the Singapore Book Publishers Association (SBPA) exhibited in the annual Frankfurt Book Fair. Today, we are also getting involved in producing innovative educational materials such as CD-ROMs to cater to the changes in the age of Information Technology.

Over the past three decades, we have remained resolutely focused on our corporate mission of placing quality and affordable educational materials in the hands of Singapore's students. In this regard, we specialise in educational books, revision books, workbooks, test books and reference books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, as well as some general titles like cookbooks. Our publications cover nearly all school subjects which include English, Chinese, Malay, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Economics, etc..

Currently we have a strong team of competent full-time editors and an excellent graphic arts department. However, we always welcome teachers, lecturers, educationists and people involved in the creative world of writing to share ideas and write with us as we ensure that EVERY book we publish is affordable, comprehensive and relevant to the practical realities of today's student.

Preston Online is a value-added service we are providing the virtual community of students-parents-teachers, especially in Singapore. As publishers with over 35 years of experience, we can play an important part in developing not only academically superior children but also responsible, morally upright, loyal and resilient adults and citizens.

Our strategy to achieve this is through the collaboration and tight networking of students, teachers, schools, parents and community via Preston Online. Hence our motto: "Linking Students-Teachers-Parents In The Knowledge Age".

Specifically, we have as our objectives:

  1. Nurturing our children into well-rounded adults through developing their social and moral fibre without compromising academic excellence
  2. Equipping our children with creative thinking and IT skills for independent, lifelong learning to cope with the practical realities of working and living in the third millennium
  3. Challenging teachers to assume new roles as facilitators rather than mere information providers
  4. Engaging and involving parents to work hand-in-glove with teachers, schools and the community in the education of their children

Sections in Preston Online such as "Creative Corner", "Thinking Cells", "EduScene", "Teacher21", "Classroom Projects", "Parent21" and "Your Pre-Schooler" strive to develop more well-rounded children, provide teachers with innovative activities/projects outside the classroom and curriculum, and change parents' mindsets to focus on the all-rounded education of our children.

Preston Online endeavours to be THE platform to educate, challenge, affect, equip, and broaden the narrow and restrictive approaches to education that hamper our progress.
